Here is a rear suspension bike from 1891 which used springs in a tube to give some give to the rear wheel.

Where is the spring located? Is it that little thing above the rear hub? Also, looks like the seat is facing backwards.
The spring is in a little tube mounted above the rear hub. This is like a mini shock absorber.
